Violin's scalable memory solutions address these requirements through two new layers in the Memory-Storage hierarchy:

Extended Memory: The extension of memory overcomes the limits of 64GB per processing board. Extended Memory enables DRAM-based memory systems with capacities of 100 GB to many TByte. |

High Performance Storage: Solid state technologies provide orders of magnitude improvements in IOPS and latency over traditional disk arrays. |
These two layers fit in the ever-increasing gap between Main Memory and Disk Storage shown in the figure below.
